Introduction
Voiding cystogram is a special radiological examination of the urinary bladder and the lower urinary tract. It involved the use of x-ray and contrast medium.

Preparation
Usually no special preparation is required. Please empty your bladder before examination.

Procedure
A small catheter is passed into the urinary bladder. Contrast medium is introduced to fully distend the urinary bladder. The patient is then asked to pass urine in the usual way. Cooperation with radiology staff is essential. Timing is very important in this examination so that appropriate images are acquired.

Indications
Voiding cystogram can be performed on patients of all ages, including infants. The common indications include:

1. Vesicoureteric reflux - This is the most common indication. In these patients urine in bladder is refluxed back into the ureters or kidneys. This can cause recurrent urinary tract infection, leading to kidney failure. It is found usually infant and young children. Early diagnosis is therefore mandatory to prevent long-term damage.

2. Neurogenic bladder - Bladder dysfunction due to disorders of the spinal cord and central nervous system.

3. Structural abnormality of bladder eg incontinence in woman after childbirth, bladder obstruction due to stricture of urinary tract.

4. Trauma to the urinary tract.
