Background

Ophthalmology is the science of eyes. As a branch of medicine, it focuses on the study and treatment of eye diseases via medical and surgical means. Here in the Department of Ophthalmology of Hong Kong Sanatorium & Hospital, specialists in Ophthalmology and professional personnel provide wide-ranging advanced examinations, assessments, eye care and treatments of wide-ranging eye diseases, including cataracts, glaucoma, corneal diseases, eyelid diseases, orbital diseases, neuro-ophthalmology, vitreomacular retinal diseases, paediatric eye diseases and others. Ambulatory day surgeries and inpatient services for major eye surgeries are also available if necessary. Emergency consultations are conducted by duty Ophthalmologists throughout the year.

With a full team of ophthalmologists in comprehensive subspecialties, dedicated paramedical staff and state-of-the-art equipment, the Department of Ophthalmology is committed to providing the best diagnostic services and clinical treatment to eye patients of all age groups worldwide.

The Department of Ophthalmology was established in 1980. It has long been a pioneer of advanced treatments and technology since then. Thanks to the commitment of specialists in Ophthalmology and paramedical staff, the Department has been undergoing extensive development over the last three decades. It was relocated, renovated and expanded in the 1990s. In 1996, Professor Guy Hugh Chan, a prominent specialist in Ophthalmology, joined the Department as Director of the then newly established Refractive Surgery Centre. The Cataract Surgery Centre was established in response to rising demand in 2003. It was later renamed Eye Surgery Centre in 2012. Privilege service packages have been provided to senior citizens since 2000.

Today the Department is one of the leading service providers in Hong Kong. Supported by top-notch professionals and advanced technology, it keeps abreast of the latest clinical advance with comprehensive, first-rate services to patients. Embracing tradition and innovation, the Department strives to remain as one of the most trusted brands in quality treatment in Hong Kong.

Guy Hugh Chan Refractive Surgery Centre formerly known as Refractive Surgery Centre was established in 1996. As a certified training centre of refractive surgery and LASIK surgery, the Centre has trained over 100 ophthalmologists through the period. It has also left one of the longest track records as well as the highest volume of LASIK surgeries performed in Hong Kong. Since January 2016, the Centre been relocated to Level 21, One Pacific Place, 88 Queensway, Hong Kong.

Cataract has long been prevalent in the aging population of Hong Kong. With tremendous advance over the past decades, cataract surgery has evolved from large corneoscleral wound ECCE (ExtraCapsular Cataract Extraction) to small corneal stab incision surgery (phacoemulsification).

The Centre was first established as Cataract Surgery Centre in 2003. It was later renamed as Eye Surgery Centre in 2012 to reflect its full scope of services in cataract, glaucoma, macular conditions, retinal diseases, etc.
